Celebrate with Swiss chocolate in Wayne, a new juice spot in Newtown Square and loads of sweet happenings along the Main Line.
• Drink Up!
From the organic, locally-sourced fruits and veggies soaked in reverse osmosis water to the surgical-grade glass bottles, Properly Pressed takes its juice—and your health—very seriously. Now open in Newtown Square, the juice bar offers a diverse menu of cold-pressed juices designed to promote optimal wellness and body function. (FYI: Cold-pressed juice is made with a hydraulic press that extracts the maximum amount of liquid from fresh fruits and veggies while preserving their nutrients.) Properly Pressed grows its herbs in house, and its juices contain no synthetic, artificial or genetically modified ingredients.
Customer favorites include Alkalize This (cucumber, pineapple, basil and lemon), the Bruce Banner (cucumber, green apple, spinach, basil and lemon) and Fineapple (red bell pepper, pineapple, red apple and lemon). Prices range from $10 to $18 for a 15.9 oz. glass of juice. The shop also sells single- and multi-day juice regimens, supplements and juice shots. The menu changes seasonally to highlight different minerals, vitamins and antioxidants.
Owner and DelCo native Jillian Maher launched the business after an illness prompted her to adopt a more wholesome diet and lifestyle.
Order online for pickup in Media or at Paul Bunyan Fitness in Newtown Square. Delivery within an eight-mile radius is also available, along with discounts for those undergoing cancer treatment. While juices are good for up to seven days thanks to natural preservation from citron (lemon, lime or orange), Properly Pressed recommends consuming them within 48 hours on an empty stomach.
Properly Pressed is located at 300 W. State Street in Media. Hours vary; check the website for details.
• Make a Life-Changing Donation
Winter weather has not only wreaked havoc on roads and schools this year, but also the nation’s blood supply. Hundreds of blood drives across the country have been canceled due to severe weather, including many on the Main Line. The American Red Cross is urging residents, especially those in Haverford and Havertown, to give blood or platelets to combat nationwide shortages. All blood types are needed.
Donations have fallen about 40 percent over the past 20 years, especially among young donors. The American Red Cross says it needs 12,500 units of blood and nearly 3,000 platelet donations a day to ensure hospitals and transfusion centers nationwide have adequate supplies.
Keep in mind that platelets can only be donated at select American Red Cross Donation Centers, NOT at community blood drives. (A special machine is needed to extract platelets from your blood, and the donation process takes about three hours from start to finish.)
Visit www.redcross.org to find a blood drive or platelet donation center near you.
• Reno at The Radnor Hotel
In a dazzling union that promises to elevate the experiences of Main Line brides and foodies, Fearless Restaurants has partnered with The Radnor Hotel to overhaul the hotel’s ballroom and event spaces and food and beverage operations. This is the hotel’s first major renovation since 2003.
The renovation will include a complete remodel of the exterior and lobby (including a two-and-a-half-foot bump out!), lush rear gardens (ideal for wedding ceremonies) and over 7,000 square feet of reimagined banquet and event space with state-of-the-art audio-visual amenities. Barbara Balongue of Villanova’s Balongue Design will oversee décor and design.
The hotel’s current restaurant, the Glenmorgan Bar and Grill, will become Fearless Restaurants’ newest eatery, Triple Crown Restaurant. The 175-seat equestrian-themed restaurant will serve contemporary American fare. Fearless Restaurants will run Triple Crown, the banquet space and gardens; Radnor Hotel owner SW Bajus will handle the rest.
• Arrivederci Amis
Urban Outfitters has closed its Devon Yard Roman-Italian restaurant, Amis Trattoria, for good. While Terrain Garden Café packs its tables day and night, Amis never found its footing. Urban will reconfigure the space by allotting half of it to a new, 50-person event venue called The Atrium at Terrain Gardens. Pizzeria Vetri will take over the remaining square footage.
