For over a year our ice maker has been broken. Might even be two. I’m not an ice cube fan, unless it’s Happy Hour, so it didn’t bother me. My husband would periodically buy a bag of ice and that worked.
While my kids were home over the holidays we hosted a few gatherings and ran out of ice more than once. I got annoyed and thought “I’m going to attempt to fix the ice maker.” I could have called any number of Appliance Doctors but I thought it would be easier to just do it myself. I despise making repair appointments. So I Googled “how do you fix a broken ice maker” and voilà… dozens of YouTube videos appeared. It seemed simple, at least that’s what all of the expert appliance YouTubers claimed. The biggest challenge was ordering the correct part. So I found the serial number on our refrigerator, ordered the ice maker unit and it came two days later.
My husband said, “I can’t believe you’re going to try and fix it yourself.” And I replied, “What’s the worst that can happen? If it doesn’t work we’re back where we started and I’ll call our handyman.”
My husband and I, as a rule, do not attempt to put things together or fix things, together. The neighbors still talk about the Gas Grill Episode of ’03. My son and I, however, are a great team. We’ve built countless pieces of Ikea furniture and we’re still friends. So he said he’d help.
We watched the videos and decided we were ready. After moving and unplugging the frig, turning off the water line, removing the freezer drawer, and finding the correct tools, we replaced the ice maker in about 30 minutes (most of which was spent looking for the proper tools).
When we finished we didn’t know if it was fixed; we had to wait for it to make ice. So I Googled “how long does it take for an ice maker to make ice?” and because it had been off, it could take anywhere from 3-12 hours!
We went out that evening and when we came back the first thing I did was look in the freezer…. Eureka! We had ice! So I took a picture and texted it to my son with “We did it!” Excellent start to 2020!
