Hi Neighbor!
My mind is sometimes like a snow globe. Not a crystal-clear globe reflecting light on a table or mantle. But one that is shaken. My mind is a globe-world where there are frequently snowstorms.
Especially during the holidays, the activities and to-do lists swirl through my head, blinding me in a mental blizzard and adding extra effort to every step. Like the globe, if I sit quietly and calmly for a while, the internal storm subsides.
The wise person who first introduced me to the idea of a snow globe mind was while learning meditation. I’ve grown to trust that it’s possible to clear the globe of my mind. Now I’m grateful to see the difference between a mental storm and clear skies. I can reduce the storm’s onslaught to flurries by simply sitting still, watching my thoughts swirl and settle after a while, just like the snow globe. I simply watch the thoughts arise and melt away.
It’s not always easy to do and I’m not always successful but I keep trying to let the snow melt and observe that the globe of my mind is calm and clear. I find that everything is accomplished more easily when not trudging through a blizzard.
I see this snowstorm mind arising periodically during the year, aside from holidays. Mental storms envelop me and I feel temporarily frozen. If I settle my mind, then every action follows naturally. It’s interesting to observe the flurries settle as I transition from overwhelmed to calm and centered.
And the best part is when I’m calm and encounter someone who’s caught in flurries, I’m not adding more snow to their storm. I’m grateful for that gift!
Wishing you a calm, peaceful mind this holiday season,
Jane
Great visual/metaphor.
I find it if I just start working on the thing that is stressing me most, even take the smallest steps to start, then the storm settles down, even with just one small step, because I’ve started. Or confronted it
