Poetry Is the Point: Mónica Gomery & Amy Barone

Presented by Main Point Books at Main Point Books

Join us as we welcome poets Mónica Gomery & Amy Barone for an evening of poetry written to hold and sustain us in this era of disconnection and climate destruction.

The event begins at 7:00 pm. RSVPS are requested via Eventbrite to help us plan seating – walk-ins are welcome. We ask that people still be masked during events.

The poems of Rabbi Mónica Gomery’s new poetry collection, “Might Kindred,” wonder aloud: can we belong to one another, and “can a people belong to a dreaming machine?” Conjuring mountains and bodies of water, queer and immigrant poetics, beloveds both human and animal, “Might Kindred” explores the intimately personal and the possibility of a collective voice.

In her new collection, Defying Extinction, poet Amy Barone informs us that she is in line for the spaceship to migrate to Mars. It’s easy to understand the impulse to escape this troubled world with “its fuss that festers when walls go up” for “a life unfettered / by wires, rules, love, and reason,” but the rest of her book suggests she’s not quite ready to give up on more terrestrial solutions. In the face of extinction, the book is an optimistic volume, finding hope in such “heirlooms” as analog clocks, spicy food, and handkerchiefs, in the fact the Catallus still instructs us over centuries, and in trees “that take longer / than stars and some loves to die.”
