A Grandfamily for Sullivan Book Launch Party & Storytime

Presented by Friends of the Marple Library at Marple Public Library

Beth will be reading the story, doing arts & crafts with the children, and a mindfulness exercise if the audience is willing! There will be snacks and refreshments available, as well as signed copies of the book.

About the book: Beth was inspired to write this book five years ago while working as a family therapist for kinship and foster care families. It is based on a true story. Sullivan is a young Koala who has to live with his Grandma when his parents are unable to take care of him. Sullivan struggles with big emotions and is confused about why he has to leave home. Grandma tries her best but has a hard time connecting with him. With the help of a friend, Sullivan and Grandma find a way to cope by looking to the soothing skies for support.

This is a realistic story with a hopeful ending about a child dealing with the loss of his parents in his everyday life. Beth chose a male character because she wants to increase normalcy around boys and men expressing emotions. The goal of the book is to help children cope with their feelings when suddenly everything they know is gone. It also allows empathy to develop for classmates or friends who are being raised by their grandparents or relatives. The book gives language to adults to explain kinship care to young children in an age-appropriate manner. We hope you will join us! All are welcome, especially grandparents and grandkids!
