Grandparents University: Two Generations Learn & Laugh in a Family Camp on Campus

Presented by West Chester University at West Chester University

Three days and two nights of bonding between grandparents and their grandchildren. Living in the University’s newest residence halls, sharing meals at the dining hall, attending interactive classes, exploring campus, and enjoying nightly entertainment. Classes range from creating a TV newscast, making robots, ropes adventure course, wellness, creative writing, money matters, and even “The Art of Laziness” with tai chi.

Grandparents University is an opportunity for family members to learn alongside one another. For three days and two nights, participants live in one of the University’s newest residence halls, share meals at the dining hall, attend interactive classes, explore campus, and enjoy evening entertainment and activities. The program is open to the public, with the majority of registrants being WCU alumni or retired faculty and staff.

New in this eighth year of the program is an option for families who live close to campus to opt out of the overnight stay and pay a reduced fee.

In addition to learning how to creating a TV newscast, grandparents and their grandchildren can choose from such courses as dancing fun, being a radio DJ, how worms help get rid of garbage, and wind power. In some classes, families will make take-home items like mini-robots or “land yachts” in others, they’ll suit up in a lab to conduct small experiments or head outdoors and don helmets for the ropes adventure course. Families can learn about their personal stories through DNA and personal wellness by having measurements taken in WCU’s Human Performance Lab. There are courses on exploring 3D virtual reality, improving writing, money matters, and even perfecting “the art of laziness” with tai chi.

WCU’s Grandparents University 2018 will conclude on June 27 by 1 p.m. with a graduation ceremony complete with the awarding of diplomas to every “graduate.” The rest of the family members are invited to this celebration.
