Hi Neighbor!

Every year around this time, we get a phone call from my mother-in-law reminding us to reset our clocks for Daylight Saving Time (we receive the same phone call in the spring). It’s kind of funny, since we’re fully functioning adults (most days) with children of our own, but she’s convinced we need the reminder. I guess I could get annoyed, but honestly, I need something (anything!) to make me laugh, considering how much I dread the day we fall back. The day seems to last forever, I’m hungry at all the wrong times and when I’m ready for it all to be over already, I can’t fall asleep. Not to mention that my kids are always extra whiny and grouchy, and I can’t send them outside to play (too dark). Don’t even get me started on infants who rise at 5 AM and refuse to “fall back.”

A couple of times I’ve floated the idea of moving to Arizona or Hawaii, where people aren’t subject to this madness, but I’m not sure this #mainlinemom could hack it in that heat. But there’s hope! In April, the Pennsylvania House of Representatives passed legislation urging Congress to make Daylight Saving Time permanent. According to the bill’s co-sponsor, Rep. Ryan Mackenzie of Lehigh County, studies show that staying on Daylight Saving Time saves energy, lowers traffic accidents and crime, and leads to healthier lifestyles.

I’m not optimistic the bill will pass before Sunday (similar legislation needs to pass in neighboring states too; otherwise commuting could be a disaster), but there’s always next year! In the meantime, I’ll be awaiting my mother-in-law’s phone call, resetting my clocks and researching real estate in Arizona.

Hang in there,
Kate
