It's a Shore Thing... on the Main Line

Hi Neighbor!

Do you ‘go down the shore’ or ‘do you go to the beach’?  I love going down the shore and my husband loves going to the beach.  Is there is a difference?  You bet there is…especially in my house! When talking about our summer vacations in New Jersey we all say it differently.  So, I decided to consult the experts (aka the internet and social media) to see which of us are saying it correctly and which of us are not – even though I already know 😉.

Google tells me “The expression ‘down the shore’, meaning at the beach, is a common regionalism in North Jersey, Philadelphia, and some parts of inland Connecticut” (Did I mention I’m from Northeast Philadelphia?).  According to Urban Dictionary it’s a “term used to describe the trip taken while going ‘down the shore’ from your home in an inland county or town. The drive to whichever beach town you are going to be spending time in is going down the shore, but once you’re there you simply go to the beach.”   Since Urban Dictionary speaks nothing but the truth, I was just going to leave it at that, but then I found these words of wisdom from Only In Your State –  14 Phrases That Only Philadelphians Say “We don’t go to the beach – we go down the shore. To say it any other way just seems downright strange”. Well that certainly settles it…oh and as a bonus, #14 settles the Jimmies vs Sprinkles debate 😊!

No matter how you say it, if visiting any of the NJ shore towns is on your summer bucket list, see below for some of the best beaches to visit.  If I missed any you LOVE, please share them in our comments section.

Sea Ya Soon,
Chris
