Hi Neighbor!

One of my favorite books to read with my daughter is “Tomorrow I’ll Be Brave”. The author and illustrator, Jessica Hische, is a lettering artist who has done work for Wes Anderson, Starbucks and Tiffany & Co. Her design and typography choices are bright, boldly colorful and whimsical – all of which helps keep this tired Mom from yawning over every word while we’re reading before bed.

But more so, it’s the message that has me hooked. Each page of the book encourages the reader to be adventurous, smart and brave (among other aspirations) but it also reassures that if you weren’t able to be these things today, tomorrow is another shot.

This past year has definitely had an impact on my mental health (as I’m sure many of you can relate). There have been many days where I don’t feel strong and brave, I feel tired and scared. But, it’s on these days specifically where I make sure we read this book. It’s a message about possibilities for children, but it also reminds me to be kind to myself and try again tomorrow. Here is the verse I can now recite by heart, perhaps it will help your tomorrows too.

Tomorrow I’ll be all the things
I tried to be today…
Adventurous
Strong
Smart
Curious
Creative
Confident
& Brave
And if I wasn’t one of them, I know that it’s okay. Tomorrow I’ll be all these things or at least I’ll try my best.

Cheers!
Marisa
