Hello Neighbor!

In addition to this MainLine Neighbors column, I also coordinate “Shelter Star” features, highlighting area animal rescues adoptable pets but I never expected to get personally involved.

To include as many rescues as possible, we feature the widely recognized as well as the smaller ones, case in point, Noah’s Ark Rescue Project and Sanctuary aka NARPS.   Noah’s Ark when contacted, agreed to participate in Shelter Star, asking if we’d highlight a neglected mule. That request stopped me in my tracks. We’d featured a horse needing a home but primarily focus on house pets, cats and dogs. Well, I said, there might be more potential adoptions for kittens and puppies since so many needed homes. But I just couldn’t get the neglected mule off my mind.

That afternoon, my 20+ year friend called to say hi. She was driving to visit her sister, adding that it was easy to social distance because her sister has a farm. (Light bulb overhead goes on.)

I casually mentioned that if her sister was interested, I knew where she could adopt a neglected mule.  Apparently my inquiry was communicated because a text arrived an hour later requesting more mule information. Surprised? So was I.  My friend added, did I ever tell you my sister was a Certified Veterinary Technician Specialist (VTS) with specialties in animal critical care and pain management? Who knew? Don’t I ask enough questions?

I called Noah’s Ark Rescue Project and Sanctuary to let them know there was interest in the mule and was informed that they’d just completed his medical and dental. He was older, underweight but good to go. I connected them with my friend’s sister.

After several lengthy visits Hubert (re-named Samule) the neglected mule joined 6 Nigerian dwarf goats, 5 sheep, a dog and two cats on a 16-acre farm with my friend’s sister as his own personal VTS.

Likely for the first time in his life, he experienced how it felt to be cared for, appreciated and cherished. Everyone involved celebrated because of Samule’s happiness and reading his story you can too.

Rescue matters,
Jane

P.S. If you’re looking to rescue farm animals as well as dogs and cats, puppies and kittens, four paws up for these local shelters!
