Hello Neighbor!

While I’m very seriously adjusting to the new normal, my husband cracked a joke.*  I realized that until then, I hadn’t laughed at anything at all for weeks. It’s hard to remain centered day after day amid the suffering, statistics and sacrifice and especially hard to find anything funny. But that sudden laughter was helpful and reminded me of a quote from Robert Frost: “If we couldn’t laugh, we would all go insane.” So, sign me up for laughter and sanity!

I maintain a new routine in my efforts to stay healthy and centered. I’ve been working out, walking the dogs, am reaching out to friends and family.  I stick to a news restricted diet since I already know the world’s upside down. I’m working on being kinder to myself and others by contributing to area charities. I’m pleased it’s spring and not the middle of winter. I’m finding joy in the birds and children outside and am grateful for good health. But I miss the presence of my fellow humans whose company lifted my spirits with silliness, playfulness and laughter.

This life re-structuring is a herculean task, requiring more self-discipline, patience and creativity than I imagined I had. Maybe I’ll learn to be an improved version of myself when things shift back again. But I’m not finding much to laugh about. I need to dig deeper to find it. Laughter is regarded as the best medicine. It decreases stress hormones and releases endorphins. So, I’m sharing a dose of some feel-good jokes and websites that have lightened things up a bit, if only for a little while.

“We need more kindness, more compassion, more joy, more laughter. I definitely want to contribute to that,” Ellen DeGeneres once said. Me too Ellen.

*My husband’s joke:  A grasshopper walks into a bar and says to the bartender, “I’d like a drink please.” The bartender says, “I have a perfect drink and it’s named for you.” The grasshopper responds, “You have a drink named Steve?”
