Hi Neighbor!

I’m somewhat tech literate but I have friends who are not. And I get it. Things change so fast it’s hard to keep up.  But the problem with being technophobic is that it can cause issues and miscommunication.

My friend Lois got a new iPhone last year and loved it. She was in a group text with her family of six adult children named FAM BAM. She loved getting cute, funny texts and videos from her kids and enjoyed the daily interaction. But after a few months she was getting a little annoyed that each time she texted or sent something fun in FAM BAM she never got a “like” or a “heart” or a comment. She was actually a little hurt that FAM BAM never responded to her contributions.

One day my daughter and I were out with Lois and her daughter Emma, and she pulled up a cute video of her grandson to show us.  Emma said, “Mom, I never saw this video.” And Lois replied “Really? I sent it to FAM BAM and you know what – no one even commented. Actually none of you ever comment on the things I send!”

With that her daughter grabbed her phone to look at her messages, “Mom, you’re sending these texts to yourself. You created a FAM BAM contact that only includes you! So none of us have ever seen any of these messages you’ve been sending.”

Her daughter scrolls down her messages and realizes her Mom had been sending messages, for close to a year, to herself, thinking they were going to her six children.  Lois’s eyes lit up and she said “Ohhhh… I thought you guys just didn’t like my texts.”

The great myth of our times is that technology is communication. ~ Libby Larsen
