MainLine Neighbors is happy to give a shout out to Newtown Square’s Pat Maloney, founder of Devon’s Black Cat Café and the founder of Pet Adoption and Lifecare Society (PALS Rescue). Havertown resident Judy Clemens, PALS volunteer and Black Cat Café Chef responded to a few questions about herself and volunteering.

Who’s the person you most admire?

Pat Maloney of non-profit PALS Rescue, saving almost 9,000 cats, kittens and occasionally other animals since 2001. She never lets an animal suffer. In 2011, Pat donated the building for Black Cat Café that contributes approximately 80% of each check to PALS.

What do you do on your days off?

I go feral cat and lost cat trapping, then PALS volunteers take them to the vet for care and neutering. My favorite place to visit is ACCT (Animal Care & Control Team Philadelphia) to see if PALS can help in any way.

Would you share something about yourself?

People would never guess that I was an emergency medical technician paramedic assistant for 13 years. I loved taking care of broken legs, lacerations, pulling people out of accidents and fixing them up.

What are you reading now?

“The Soup Bible” by Deborah Mayhew. I’m reading it to learn about other soups that are around.

Does your family get involved?

Yes! My son is the sous chef at Black Cat Café and my daughter Kirsten is a volunteer vet tech. My daughter Shannon does all the vocal performances at special Black Cat events.
