Hi Neighbor!

This is the first time in a long time that I’m not in a book club. Over the years I’ve been in book clubs with friends, neighbors, coworkers and family members, and I’ve loved them all. But three young children and their endless stream of activities have left me with these strange pockets of time that I often can’t anticipate or frankly, make good use of.

Thankfully I’ve found a replacement: An Articles Club. The club has two members—me and my dad. We both subscribe to the weekend edition of The New York Times, and every Sunday, we call one another to discuss and dissect the various articles and sections. At this stage of life, an Articles Club feels just right. I can read an article during my daughter’s swim lesson or while the kids are playing outside.

My dad lives a few hours away, and we don’t see each other as often as we’d like. Our Articles Club is an impetus to check in, and I’ve come to treasure our weekly back-and-forth.

Here are a few of the articles we’ve shared and discussed recently:
• Sexual Harassment & Unequal Pay at the Nation’s Largest Jewelry Retailer
• An Amputee’s 140-Mile Run Through the Desert
• Women & the “Greedy” Professions
• Letter of Recommendation: Jury Duty
• My Cousin Tried to Kill Me
• How Goop’s Haters Grew Gwyneth Paltrow’s Company
• Reflections from a Writer Who Covered the Central Park Five
• Stage 4 Lung Cancer & a Mountain to Climb

As you can see from the above list, we’ll tackle anything! We both just love thought-provoking pieces from talented writers.

Happy Father’s Day to all the dads, dads-to-be and dads-at-heart out there,
Kate
