Hello Neighbor!

As you are reading this newsletter, I am at my oldest daughter’s college graduation.  Yup – college.  I know that many of you can relate to my feeling of “What? Wait a minute… how did this happen so quickly?!”  I can still vividly remember car-seat struggles with toddlers for crying out loud!

Time is a strange thing.  There are times that I look back on an event and think “Wow, that was so long ago! I can barely remember that.”  But then there are other times that I feel like a 15 year time span was only 3 years long.  The older we get, the faster time seems to go.  I always assumed that was simply due to the fact that each year is a smaller percentage of a life lived as we age.  So, at 5 years old – of course a year feels like an eternity, it’s 20% of our lifetime.  Now… at 50, a year is only 2% of a lifetime.  But, according to psychologists, it’s more than just that.  It’s actually based on our “new” memory creations.  When we are younger, we have tons of new experiences and are continually learning new skills.  As we age, we tend to get into more routine (dare I say, mundane) activities.  This “routine” causes time to feel like it went by much more quickly.

The upside to all of this?!  We can actually alter our perception of time as we get older – simply by continuing to challenge ourselves, learn new skills, break out of our “box”, explore new places and ideas.  So, since it clearly feels as though I was taking my daughter to preschool just a few years ago, and today she graduates from college… well, it’s definitely the right moment for me to take some “time perception” adjustment action!
