Hi Neighbor!

Last Thursday at my son’s college a young girl’s life was brutally taken. You may have heard about it on national news. She was a senior political science major, set to graduate in May, preparing to go to Drexel University to study law in the fall.

Leaving downtown Columbia, SC at the end of a night out with friends she called for an Uber. A car drove up that she assumed was her Uber and she got in. Not uncommon.

She was found on Friday afternoon. Parents, family friends, and community devestated. Lives forever changed.

The President of my son’s college asked each student to take this pledge. If YOU use ride share apps please take the pledge and please send it to your daughters, sons, family and friends… anyone who may use a ride share app.

I pledge to NEVER use a ride share service without doing the following:
Ensure the license plate, make, model and color of the vehicle match what’s in your app and the driver matches the photo and name in the app
Ask the driver “WHAT’S MY NAME?” If s/he doesn’t say your name, DO NOT get into the vehicle. Or open the back door and ask “who are you here to pick up?” So many people ask “are you here to pick up *insert name*? NEVER give your name! Make them tell you.
Words cannot begin to express my feelings. I am so sorry for this family and their loss, and I hope and pray that one day they will find some peace. Her father said at the vigil, “Don’t ever forget her name.” We will not.

Forever To Thee, Samantha.
