If you’re not familiar with the improvisational troupe Better than Bacon, you’re probably guessing this article is about food. If laughter is food for the soul then you guessed right!  Better than Bacon is a group created by students attending an improv class. Now in a live theater setting they play games and create scenes for audiences. Their performances are clever, moving and often hilarious. Everything’s based on spontaneous input from one another. And the audience is also incorporated, offering responses requested from the stage.

Nothing’s scripted. Whatever arises, however implausible with or without words, is greeted quickly with a giant “yes!” in agreement as if it’s always reasonable. Then interacting with an “and” to keep things moving along, invariably leading to unexpected reactions, twists and turns. It’s all about responding in the moment and the moments contribute to satisfying and really funny outcomes. As an audience member I happily played along in my imagination, wondering what I’d say or how I’d participate in a game.

If you want to give it a try, be prepared to get out of the house as well as your head. It’s not about analytical thinking. Just be spontaneous and go with the often wacky flow! Watch where the surprising interactions happen, one participant to another and where it leads you.
