Sitting on the floor, opening the crate and resting my hand at the door’s edge, I offered tiny treats in my palm, speaking to him gently and calmly. I sat there as I’d done many times before as a rescue volunteer. He’d cautiously approach and sniff from a distance, retreating again and again to the bars behind.

Then one morning, with the crate door open, not offering anything, not speaking and momentarily distracted, he willingly came toward me. I slowly reached in and petted him under his chin. As he came further forward, as his body relaxed, I carefully lifted him onto my lap. His shivering stopped and my decision to rescue Roger began.

He’s not very cute. He’s not a breed I wanted. But my heart opened wide to take him in. After a few months at home, he’s house trained, a champion snuggler, comes when called and occasionally plays with toys. He’s a gentle, attentive companion whose sweet natured devotion make him adorable to my loving eyes. And now Roger doesn’t shiver anymore.
