Named after Eli Shugart, an early 19th-century tavern keeper, Sugartown was a typical crossroads village that provided goods and services required by the surrounding farm community. Its central location in Willistown Township made it a favored place for political and social organizations to hold meetings in the schoolhouse, tavern, and community hall located there.
