The Miracle Worker at Conestoga High School

The true story of Helen Keller, blind, deaf and mute since infancy, is one of courage and resilience, determination and triumph over adversity. The first deaf and blind person to earn a Bachelor of Arts degree, she inspired millions and became a champion for the disabled. But before she became a world-famous humanitarian, she herself was inspired by one person; Annie Sullivan, the miracle worker.

Keller was left blind and deaf at the age of 19 months. She became wild and unruly and many thought she was mentally impaired and should be institutionalized.  When she was six, her parents hired Annie Sullivan to help their daughter. Later in life, Keller called the day Annie came to her home her “soul’s birthday”.

Though highly intelligent, her near complete lack of language meant Keller was extremely isolated. This play tells the story of how Annie Sullivan broke through that isolation and persevered through Helen’s rage to gain her trust and unlock the world of language for her student.

This emotion-packed and powerful play is profoundly moving. It is a positive show for the whole family; appropriate for children, especially those 5 and up.
