The blood drive honors the memory of Main Line resident Carol Axelrod, the grandmother of a current Shipley student. Carol became dependent on blood products while being treated for multiple myeloma, an incurable cancer of the blood and bone marrow. Because blood was available every time she needed a transfusion, she was able to celebrate her 60th birthday and enjoy special events with family members before she passed away in 2008. Her family founded the memorial blood drive later that year, with a mission of enabling other patients to spend more time with their loved ones by furthering understanding of the importance of donating blood. The blood drives held in Carol’s memory, which now take place four times each year in different locations, have collected enough blood products to have helped nearly 14,000 patients. This will mark the fourth year that Shipley and the CHA Memorial Blood Drive have partnered to save lives.
