Lisa Learner
Lisa Learner loves local landscapes. Her paintings portray the train stations, woods, beaches and buildings of the community that she inhabits. She will include family, friends or strangers in her paintings, but the subject matter will be the light, the shadows, and the sense of space.
She has spent most of her life in the Philadelphia area. She studied painting at Tyler School of Art and the University of Pennsylvania under Neil Welliver, and received her Master of Fine Arts from Penn in the 1980s. She has been living, teaching, and painting in this region ever since.

The subject matter of her paintings is pretty consistent: familiar figures in local landscapes. They are about the effects of light and shadows, but they also explore the contrast between the human form and the landscapes or the architecture: patient people against soft backgrounds of plants and soil, or against the sharp angles, strong light and the distant perspectives at train stations.
