“Dear Philadelphia” is a ten-part jazz suite written by composer and drummer Doug Hirlinger in collaboration with four prominent Philadelphia-based artists: Tim Motzer, Ursula Rucker, M’Balia Singley, and John Swana.
The composition celebrates the identity, grit, and musical legacy of Philadelphia while taking a bold look at problems of gentrification and inequality. Merging song, poetry, and theater, the performance features a variety of sounds, styles, and forms.
Hirlinger created “Dear Philadelphia” during his 2017–18 residency at the Kimmel Center for the Performing Arts. The artists will be performing an excerpt of the full composition.
