Bird Banding: Reading Feathers and Advancing Bird Conservation

Bird banding is the primary method by which scientists study bird populations today. The process involves gently capturing the birds with mist nets and releasing them after gathering important data and applying a lightweight band to their legs. While the bird is in the hand, we can learn a lot about its health and age by studying the feathers. In this fascinating talk Blake Goll, Nature Education Coordinator for Willistown Conservation Trust and a federally licensed bird bander, will discuss the process, its importance to bird conservation, and future wildlife tracking endeavors including Motus radio telemetry technology.
