  • Art Ability Sneak Peek
    Art Ability Sneak Peek
    Visual Arts
Throughout the year, Good Neighbor features members of the Main Line community whose contributions make a difference. MainLine Neighbors is happy to give shout outs to local Art Ability volunteer Claire Larson, Newtown Square and artist Mimi Barclay Johnson, Haverford. Their efforts support Bryn Mawr Rehab Hospital’s annual Art Ability program. This international juried exhibition and sale, created and implemented by Lois Levy in 1994, encourages those living with disabilities in our community to receive formal recognition for their creativity. In addition to advancing their artistic success, 80% of Art Ability sales and commissions benefit the artists. This year’s exhibition and sale begins with a preview party on November 2 and the show continues through January 26. It features 453 artworks, sculpture and jewelry by 186 artists from 30 states and 6 countries.  Bryn Mawr Rehab acquired and displays over 300 Art Ability objects through the year and Art Ability artists are included in major corporate art collections. Claire and Mimi respond to a few questions about themselves and Bryn Mawr Rehab Hospitals’ Art Ability Program: Volunteer Claire Larson, Newtown Square:  Is there a particular moment or experience that made you most proud of the program? Each year, the most exciting moment for me is the opening night of the annual art exhibition. At our Preview Party, artists join the festivities and have an opportunity to meet each other as well as patrons and guests. Hands down, the experience of serving as an artist liaison and being witness to artists realization that their artwork has been sold, is the most rewarding experience for me. They take such pride in their artwork and I love the opportunity to experience their joy. Have any of the artists become personal friends through the years? I have a unique connection to Art Ability artist Sal Panasci of Berywn because we volunteer together in horticultural therapy and we are both former patients on the brain injury unit at Bryn Mawr Rehab Hospital. Sal and I both share a love of Art Ability. How long have you been involved with Art Ability? In 2002, I was an inpatient at Bryn Mawr Rehab Hospital after suffering from a brain aneurism and stroke. After months of intensive therapy, I started volunteering at the hospital in 2004. Thirteen years ago, I started volunteering with Art Ability and joined the committee. I currently volunteer at the hospital three days a week in many roles: patient transport, horticultural therapy, and Art Ability. Artist Mimi Barclay Johnson, Haverford: What motivates you to create artwork? I am motivated by the beauty I see everywhere and want to share that beauty not only through my own paintings but by inspiring others to see and create. I am still motivated to teach and help others by conducting watercolor workshops.  When I paint, I become absorbed in my work and somehow don’t feel the pain. Not feeling pain can be motivating. There is still a lot to do and that motivates me. Painting is fun and full of color, like life. It is a gift for which I am truly grateful, and I must live to be 150 to accomplish all I want to do. What do you like about participating in the Art Ability exhibit? Participating in the Art Ability exhibit makes me feel I am not alone and that encourages me. The Art Ability team goes out of its way to promote disabled artists by showing the creative contributions of these artists to the world and in doing so, gives each artist a sense of worth. • Andee Axe
    Andee Axe
Visual Arts: Mixed Media, Painting, Visual Arts
Andee Axe makes art that smiles at you. And it makes you want to smile back. No matter what color is on her brush, she paints from a palette of vivid emotions, happy memories, and pure joy. Whether familiar or famous, the subjects in her paintings aren’t afraid to have fun and take you along for the ride. They dance. They wink. They sparkle. They use bold pop colors to celebrate the brightest moments we share with the people who we love. Each painting sends a burst of happy into the world, and that’s something we can all appreciate. Andee is the kind of person who has never been able to sit and watch the paint dry. From an early age, she has always had her sleeves rolled up, always ready to enthusiastically make a splash on any canvas she could find. She studied two-dimensional fine arts at Moore College of Art and later worked as a licensed artist inside Philadelphia. • Sarah Baptist
    Sarah Baptist
    Visual Arts: Painting, Visual Arts
Sarah Baptist – Artist Statement The character and essence of city streets, alleys, train tracks and such, capture Sarah’s attention when she paints. She finds rhythms in the shapes of the urban landscape. Sarah finds the impact of man and nature co-existing a fascinating subject. Sarah is an urban landscape oil painter, who enjoys plein air painting. Being on location, responding and reacting to the light, color and atmosphere is a challenge and a joy. Recently, Sarah has started to use this plein air work, as well as many photos taken while out painting, to create larger urban landscapes and abstractions in her home studio. Sarah started out as a set designer because she loved creating the illusion of another world on the stage. That morphed into painting scenery for theater, opera and specialty events for 20+ years from Maine to Wisconsin to New Hampshire and finally Delaware. Now she creates worlds with oil paints rather than on the stage! Sarah is a self-taught artist. She has shown her work in numerous galleries in the area and has won a number of awards at regional plein air events. Sarah invites you to see more of her artwork at SarahBaptistArt.com and Instagram.com/sbaptistart
  • Siobhan Bedford
    Siobhan Bedford
    Visual Arts: Painting, Visual Arts
Siobhan Bedford’s oil paintings, strive to capture the raw energy and complexity of creation, through explorations of rhythm in the chaos of flowing color. A bright focal point often emerges into ethereal atmospheres, revealing forms which are rooted in the earth’s elements and hint at a connection to the infinite. She paints sitting on the floor turning the canvas as she works. This allows a sense of floating above rather than the ordinary orientation of up and down. She sees painting as an extension of the self-revealing inner emotional energy states. It expresses a kind of consciousness in color and form that is both deeply personal yet finds a connection in viewers with a shared inner experience. She received her BFA, Illustration and Painting from Marywood College, Scranton, PA in 1995. Her most recent solo show “Emergence” was at the Chester County Art Association, West Chester, PA in 2016. She has been participating in the Chester County Open Studio Tour since 2016. She shares her art making experience on her blog “Behind The Studio Door.” www.siobhanbedford.com

I don’t know what compels me to get up each day and rifle though images and hand-painted papers to find the odds and ends I paste onto a canvas, board or piece of paper.  I’m quite obsessed. I guess that selling vintage picturebooks for nearly two decades had a hand in this manic pursuit as I so love the illustrators of these books who greatly influenced my choice of subject matter – colorful, imaginary landscapes and creatures. Using painted papers and ephemera, I make whimsical worlds filled with critters, carnival whirligigs and joyous, playful people wearing funny hats and bow ties. If the result makes me laugh, I’m satisfied. If the result makes a viewer smile, I consider it a success. I’m playing photography.  Oh my. What fun! Stephen Hawking said, “We have this one life to appreciate the grand design of the universe.” I’m so grateful and cognizant of my one life and aim to fill it with laughter, love & fun. Making art is playful. It fills me with joy.  It’s fun.  It’s as simple as that.

I have an undergraduate degree from Towson State University in Studio Arts/Art History (1978) and a Master’s degree from the University of the Arts in Museum Studies (2004). Pottery has always been a passion of mine, a journey that began many years ago. Due to professional demands and life in general, that passion felt like a guilty pleasure that could only be indulged occasionally and was even relegated to long periods of hibernation. After deciding to leave my career in academia and clinical research, it was high time to get my hands back into clay with zeal. Most of my work is thrown on the wheel, sometimes with the accents of carving and/or hand-building. I create forms both functional and artistic with many mediums of clay, from dark earthenware, to stoneware, to porcelain. For me, working with clay is mesmerizing, challenging, therapeutic, inspirational, and ever-evolving. I find that I lose myself in the process as time zooms by, and at the end I have a creation to show for my effort. It is not always what I set out to make, but it is what the clay wanted to be. Sometimes we just have to listen to the clay… SRK Pottery has been shown and made available for purchase in galleries in the Philadelphia and Gettysburg areas of Pennsylvania. SRK Pottery can also be viewed via Instagram at @srkpottery

I paint using things that already exist, this is what feels true to me. I need to reflect on culture, past and present, as an arbiter of interpretation. Others have created and have only touched on, merely scratched the surface. I then explore the subtle nuances of language and life. I need to explore, as I begin to paint, I let my mind wander into a free association. I define my oeuvre with compositions, which are provocative and whimsical. It is my intent to propel the viewer into scenes of seemingly unrelated subjects, contained within a captivating and complex sonatas. The simultaneous expressions are pop and edgy, esoteric and direct, unrelated and curiously similar, creating a visual language of paradox and juxtaposition. I want to provoke an emotional response from the viewer. That is why I paint.

Lynnette Shelley is an award-winning Pennsylvania artist specializing in contemporary mixed media animal and nature paintings. Having a great love of wildlife, patterns and archetypes, Shelley fuses these influences into her strikingly unique artworks. Her highly detailed and complex compositions are created using a sophisticated process developed from a buildup of multiple layers incorporating techniques in both drawing and painting – from crosshatching to ink splatter to linear painting.  Some of Shelley’s work (her “fauxsaic” paintings) also incorporates elements of collage in which she adds hand-colored and cut watercolor paper to the artwork in a process that resembles mosaic tile. Shelley’s animal and nature themed artworks have been displayed nationally as well as regionally at museums, art galleries and other venues. In 2021, Shelley was awarded “Master Artisan” status by the Pennsylvania Guild of Craftsmen. Originally from Delaware, Shelley lives in Ambler, Pennsylvania, and maintains a private studio in Norristown.

My aim as an artist is to strive for honesty. I believe it is key for communication through portrait, figure, or still life; to capture what is sincere and felt. I am inspired by interactions with people, and objects of personal meaning. Most of my portraits are alla prima, because I like the idea of preserving one moment with the model. Through still life, I can infuse meaning with seemingly random objects. I received my B.F.A. in Painting from Moore College of Art and Design. To further my studies, I completed the Advanced Fine Art Program at Studio Incamminati in Philadelphia, where I am currently a fellow.

My prints reflect the way I see the world.  From an abandoned building to a funny little praying mantis, I see the challenge of capturing the essence of my subject.  Some of my prints are straight out of the camera, and others I have added textures to create the mood of how I envision the subject.  Sometimes I get really inspired and create a composite print from several of my images.   Regardless  of the creative path I take, it is all driven from the passion I have for photography.   I live in Thornton, Pennsylvania with my husband. Currently retired from my full time job as a Nuclear Medicine Technologist. My favorite pastimes are photography, gardening and reading. I have been into photography since a very young age. Every new advancement in the field of photography has offered a great challenge and learning experience. My main focus in photography is landscapes and nature.  I love the challenge of photographing the breathtaking moments around us.  From the little hummingbirds in my gardens to the majestic sunset down by the beach.  To be able to capture a moment in time is exhilarating for me–it is my passion.

My artwork reflects intensity and strength. Pen and ink is an ideal medium for this purpose. Pure black sharply contrasted with white creates potential for direct and classical imagery. I enjoy the challenge of producing various textures and emotions using only the most basic tools: a black pen mark. I am currently exploring additional mediums with the intent of capturing the human spirit and my own personal journey. You can track my progress as I grow at Studio Incamminati through my Instagram account: @scottwoyakart. I am learning to draw the figure first using charcoal, then grisaille, and eventually full color. As I evolve, my resulting artwork will become an outlet for the fire that burns within. Let’s do this thing! – Scott Woyak
